Team owner Dean Spanos returned to his family roots in Eva, Messinia, on the road to Flag Football’s Olympic debut at LA28

The Los Angeles Chargers successfully hosted the first-ever NFL Flag Football Camp in Messinia, bringing the excitement and values of American football to hundreds of children from across the region in the historic town of Methoni.

The event marked another important step in the international growth of flag football, as the sport continues its journey toward its official Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The camp took place as part of Messinia Challenge 2026 and was included in the NFL’s international initiative aimed at introducing younger generations around the world to the sport. Children from all over Messinia participated in training drills and introductory sessions led by Chargers coaches and executives, learning the values of teamwork, discipline, inclusion, and sportsmanship.

Former Chargers star Shawne Merriman was also present, sharing advice and encouraging children to discover and embrace the sport.

Presence of Government and Local Authorities

The event was honored by the presence of the General Secretary of Sports, Mr. Giorgos Mavrotas, who highlighted the importance of introducing young people to new Olympic sports and strengthening the connection between sports, education, and local communities.

During his visit to Messinia, Chargers owner and Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos also met with the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Mr. Isidoros Kouvelos, as well as TEMES Chairman and CEO Mr. Achilleas Konstantakopoulos. The meetings highlighted the strong growth potential of flag football in Greece ahead of the LA28 Olympic Games.

The Mayor of Pylos-Nestor, Mr. Panagiotis Karvelas, was also present and honored Mr. Dean Spanos with a special commemorative distinction for his contribution to sports, his support of younger generations, and his family’s long-standing connection with Messinia and Greece.

Representatives of the United States Embassy in Greece also participated in the activities, reaffirming the strong cultural and sports ties between Greece and the United States, as well as the growing international momentum of flag football ahead of its Olympic inclusion in 2028.

In a particularly emotional moment, students and teachers from a school in Methoni offered Mr. Spanos handmade gifts and commemorative items, expressing their gratitude for the organization of the NFL Flag Football Camp and the unique experience offered to the children of the region.

Dean Spanos Returns to Eva, Messinia

The following day, Dean Spanos visited Eva, Messinia, the village from which his grandfather originated before emigrating to the United States.

The visit carried deep emotional significance both for the Spanos family and the local community, with residents warmly welcoming him back to a place that remains an important part of the family’s history.

During their visit to Eva, Dean Spanos and representatives of the Chargers visited the village’s primary school, where they met with students, teachers, and residents.

The Chargers donated signed memorabilia and an official team jersey signed by players to the students, while Dean Spanos presented a personally signed letter to the school. In addition, the organization donated new air-conditioning units to help upgrade the school’s facilities.

One of the most touching moments of the visit was Dean Spanos’ presence at the local church, which had been built years ago with financial support from his grandfather and remains a symbol of the family’s deep connection to Eva and Messinia.

On the Road to LA28

The activities in Messinia marked the fourth NFL Flag Football Camp organized in Greece, following successful events in Santorini, Thessaloniki, and Athens.

With flag football officially joining the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the Los Angeles Chargers continue to play an active role in introducing young people to the sport and inspiring the next generation of athletes.

Dean Spanos stated:

“Being in Messinia and returning to the village where my family comes from is deeply emotional for me. Seeing so many children participating in the camp and embracing flag football fills me with optimism for the future of the sport in Greece. My family has always had a very strong connection with this country, and it is extremely important for us to continue building that relationship through sports and community engagement.”

The NFL Flag Football Camp in Messinia was not only a sporting event, but also a celebration of culture, heritage, youth empowerment, and the global growth of flag football ahead of its historic Olympic debut in Los Angeles.
