The open maxi 65ft Cometa’s maiden voyage ended on the evening of Tuesday 16th June when she sailed into her home port, Limassol Marina. After a 1,500 NM journey to Cyprus, the Nireas Offshore Sailing Team was greeted by family, friends and key ambassadors of the sport at Limassol Marina’s Harbour Master.
Designed by Maurizio Cossutti, in a quest for enhanced performance and pure speed, the carbon-fiber racer is one of the marvels of the Open Class. Nireas Offshore Sailing Team is an exciting new project that aims to change the history of sailing in Cyprus by providing the very first pure racing yacht able to compete at an international level. It is manned by some of the best sailors on the island, all sharing a common passion and vision for participation at prestigious regattas with a Cyprus flag.
The maiden voyage was dedicated to the memory of Calliope Mavroyianni, who passed away in September 2014 after a long battle with cancer. Sailing was her greatest passion and she competed in various Offshore Regattas. Calliope was a beloved member of the sailing community in Cyprus and part of the Cyprus Sailing Federation.
