In this latest newsletter, we would proudly wish to inform the yachting community that our marine surveying firm, CMT INTERMARINE MARITIME SERVICES as of May 2016, has included a new value added service, within the scope of preventive maintenance and condition monitoring of GRP/FRP yachts.
Plenty of discussion has been around for quite sometime now regarding osmosis, blistering and delamination of hulls and GRP/FRP structures. Since the harsh marine environment can have adverse effects on anything that floats, it goes without saying that pleasure and commercial yachts are at the top of this list, especially when take into consideration the bill on possible repair costs.
Fortunately, the introduction and use of a marine moisture meters, facilitates the routine condition assessment of GRP/FRP hulls with regards to moisture retention between the layers of the laminate and gelcoat. This provides yacht owners with vital information as to the status of the hull and enables for possible preventive or corrective actions to be taken in a timely manner.
Important to mention is that although a moisture meter may be a valuable tool when it comes to hull condition monitoring, its results (useless in the hands of an untrained person), shall by no means be the decisive factor when considering if and what steps should possibly be taken.
This is where the input of an expert surveyor is required, to assess the results of the measurements and proceed to additional inspections such as visual and percussion checks, the combined results of which, along with experience and expertise would help in deciding the proper plan of action.
Our company is in the pleasant position to provide such services to any interested party, either this be within the scope of an annual condition examination, a pre-purchase survey or post repair monitoring. In this respect we welcome inquiries and we are ready to provide you with our services!
