The 6th Mediterranean Yacht Show was a 5-day event which took place in Nafplion from 4-8 May, bringing together 102 registered luxury crewed charter yachts and over 450 international brokers from 31 countries.
One of the highlights of the show was the very popular Chefs’ Competition, in which the participating yacht chefs put their talents to the test as they transformed classic ‘street food’ into a truly gourmet experience.
A prestigious panel of judges presided over the competition, led by the 2 Michelin star chef of Spondi restaurant in Athens, Angelos Lantos, and chef Thanos Stasinos, previously of Nikkei (Athens), Pacific (Monte Carlo) and the Ritz Carlton (Valencia).
In Category A’ of the competition, Chef Angelos Lantos was accompanied by Chef Thanos Stasinos and Maarten Janssen, who is no stranger to the Mediterranean Yacht Show in the role of judge for the Chefs’ Competition. Assessment of the competing entries was carried out on Sunday 5 May, following a day of trying a medley of tantalising dishes on board the participating yachts.
On Monday 6 May the judging panel had another day of tasting the mouthwatering creations of entrants in Category A' Platinum. Chefs Lantos and Stasinos were joined by broker Julie Bichon as they set about savouring the innovative, culinary creations of the talented chefs. Looking for a combination of appearance, taste, originality and nutritional value, the panel had the opportunity to sample delightful dishes full of freshness and flair.
Category A’ is open to all yachts charging a daily charter rate of up to 8.999 euros / day in high season and this year the participating chefs impressed the judges with their imaginative and unique creations. Eventually, the top three dishes were selected, as well as the best entry in the Tablescaping competition, and the winners received their award from Maarten Janssen.
The second leg of the Chefs’ Competition is the Category A’ Platinum, which is open to yachts charging a daily charter rate of 9.000 euro / day and above in high season. Modern twists on classic street food resulted in dishes meeting the highest level of international culinary standards and the worthy winners along with the crew taking first place in the Tablescaping Competition were presented their award by Julie Bichon.
The participating chefs of this year's competition embraced the theme of Gourmet Beach Food with great enthusiasm, using their extensive skills and experience to present exquisite dishes that left the attending judges thoroughly impressed. The winners in both categories as well as the Tablescaping results were announced at the MEDYS Lounge on Wednesday 8 May on a note of great celebration.
The award ceremony would not have been so successful without the invaluable support of this year’s Sponsors. 3Sixty Grill Dining and Wine Bar kindly provided the food for the evening, with Domaine Skouras serving their excellent wine. The Greek producers of world class wines also presented the first place winners in each category with a complimentary 2-nights stay in the Domaine Skouras Estate in Argos.
